Eliyahu M. Goldratt was born in Israel in 1948. He studied physics and philosophy at the universities of Tel Aviv and Bar-Ilan. After studying he spent a couple of years working in the US and the UK, and still is leading a firm that developed production planning software, among other things. Ever since Eli Goldratt wrote his book The Goal in 1984, he has enjoyed international renown as business consultant and management guru. In The Goal he introduced his Theory of Constraints, which since then he has worked out in more detail for a variety of disciplines, including IT, project management and marketing. Goldratt has sold over five million books in more than 20 languages. He has also produced instruction videos explaining his ideas and has even written a play about them. One of Goldratt´s favorite pastimes was provoking managers. He thrived on making fun of the latest ideas on business administration and management. In an interview he once said: "My approach is mainly common sense. But this means that what goes on in most companies is common nonsense. A lot of management ideas are bullshit. Strategy is long-term bullshit and Activity Based Costing is very precise bullshit. But it´s still bullshit." Goldratt died in 2011.
